Principals, Abbotsford Printing
Prospera Credit Union

Abbotsford Printing is located between the TransCanada Highway and the Canada/US border near the intersection of Manufacturer’s Way and Farmer Road, an appropriate address considering that co-owner Bob Dyck grew up on a Fraser Valley farm and divided his early years between farming and working in the printing industry.

“He was a professional pressman for several years before we went into business eighteen years ago,” his wife Dorothy says cheerfully by phone.

It’s only 8 a.m. but her day is already well under way. The successful, full-service design, consultation and printing business is among the oldest in the region. A local credit union played an important role in its development.

“We had a personal account with the Abbotsford branch of Prospera credit union, and even though we had never run a business before, they went out of their way to help us with financial assistance and business advice. We weren’t just a name on a piece of paper. They sat down and discussed our plans with us, and asked us what our hopes and dreams were.”

That was eighteen years ago and Dorothy and her husband haven’t looked back once. Who has the time? Having raised a family of three now-grown children, when Dorothy isn’t helping run the company—a 24/7 demand as any business owner knows—she’s involved in the community. She sits on both the local and provincial police boards, and is on the fundraising board of the new Abbotsford hospital, which will be the first in Canada to be built incorporating a state-of-the-art cancer centre.

On a personal level, one of the things Dorothy appreciates most about her credit union is its tangible commitment to the local community. On a professional level, she commends its support for smaller businesses.

“They’re very willing to work with you, and to provide input and suggestions to help set you up.”

Now that’s news worth printing.
